Tobacco Use Prevention and CessationEnvironmental Tobacco Smoke"Your cigarette is killing me!"What is Environmental Tobacco Smoke?Environmental Tobacco Smoke (ETS) or Secondhand Smoke is the cigarette, cigar, or pipe smoke that YOU inhale, whether you smoke or not, in the presence of someone who is smoking. ETS is even present outdoors, in the non-smoking sections of restaurants, and many other public buildings! How does ETS affect my health (even if I'm a nonsmoker!)?Many illnesses and chronic diseases can be attributed to ETS, including acute respiratory infections, asthma, eye and nasal irritation, middle ear infections, coronary heart disease, lung cancer, nasal sinus cancer, SIDS, and low birth weight. ETS can also exacerbate existing conditions like asthma and heart disease. How can I protect myself from the harms associated with ETS?The only way to protect yourself from ETS is to avoid it, and choosing non-smoking sections of a building where smoking is allowed is not enough.I am being exposed to ETS in my favorite restaurant or in my workplace. What can I do?Encourage businesses in your area to go smoke-free! Many businesses are unaware of the risk associated with environmental tobacco smoke, but Health Action Council can help. Contact us for more information on working with businesses in your area to eliminate ETS! |
