Asthma Education and Management

Breathe Well, Live Well

The American Lung Association is pleased to announce a new adult asthma management program entitled “Breathe Well, Live Well.”  This program is designed to provide to adults with asthma the basic self management knowledge and skills to reduce asthma-related morbidity and improve their quality of life. There are three components to the program.  The first is an orientation module, which consists of a 15 minute phone call made by the facilitator up to one month prior to the workshop session.  The second module is an actual asthma workshop lasting 4-5 hours.  This module can be done all one day, or divided up.  The third module is a follow-up phone call by the facilitator to each participant.

The American Lung Association of North Carolina has been awarded a small grant to launch this program in our state.  We will be offering a minimum of two facilitator trainings between February 10 and April 30, 2007.  We invite participation based of the following criteria:

  •  Those interested in being trained as facilitators must have access to a population of adults with asthma who would benefit from this asthma education program.

  • All trained facilitators must agree to implement and evaluate the Breathe Well, Live Well program within that population by May 31, 2007.

  • All trained facilitators must maintain open communication with the state office of the ALANC and/or their local contact.

  • All trained facilitators with provide the ALANC with attendance sheets and pre/post tests at the conclusion of their programs.

There is no charge for the training and all materials will be provided.  Participants will be responsible for their own travel expenses.

Listen to Pam Elwood, Family/Pediatric Nurse Practitioner; Certified Asthma Educator for the Cleveland County Health Dept., speak on State Radio, May 10, 2007, about the Live Well Breathe Well program.
